The Bren School of Environmental Science & Management (www.bren.ucsb.edu) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor as the first of a new cluster to start July 1, 2011. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. or have completed all requirements for the degree by July 1, 2011.  Joint appointments are possible with affiliated departments such as Economics or Political Science. Through a new cluster, the Bren School seeks to expand its faculty expertise in the social sciences.   We seek scholars firmly grounded in a discipline with research focus in (1) Environmental/Resource Economics (PhD in economics, agricultural economics or related field with research in microeconomic theory or empirical environmental and resource economics), (2) Environmental Politics (PhD in political science with research in institutions and a subfield of American politics, comparative politics or international relations), or (3) Empirical Environmental Policy (PhD in political science, economics, geography, or other field with empirical research in environmental policy and management).   The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant discipline and will have existing or emerging research activities that are related to one or more of the School’s application interest areas: marine resource and coastal management, water resource management, conservation planning, energy and climate, and pollution prevention.  Demonstrated depth and research publications in the home discipline and interest in collaborating across disciplines are desirable attributes.  Appointments will be at the Assistant (without tenure) or Associate (with tenure) levels, as appropriate given candidates’ scholarly records.  The final decision about the number of positions recruited this year will depend on funding from the administration. The Bren School is a graduate school providing rigorous, multi-disciplinary training in environmental science and management to Masters and PhD students. The faculty are drawn from the natural sciences, social sciences and management. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply, including minorities, women, and persons with disabilities.  The school is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.

A member of the Bren School faculty writes, in part:

[T]he  Bren School here at University of California, Santa Barbara is recruiting for a cluster of social science  hires in the area of environmental economics and politics ....
One of the likely positions, in particular, is seeking a scholar who studies environmental institutions. Although we  don't yet have final approval for the positions because we're waiting on budget approval, we have begun to advertise….
In particular, we are looking for someone (most likely a political  scientist) who studies institutions in the context of the environment. This doesn't, of course, mean that all of the work must be  related to the environment. The Bren School is an interdisciplinary  school of environmental science and management. Generally, we are very  clear about seeking scholars who excel in their home field and trusting  that this excellence will at times translate into ground-breaking interdisciplinary workas well. We are very lucky here to teach only  masters and phd students.
The person in this position would likely be  responsible for a seminar on environmental institutions and have some  flexibility in other teaching responsibilities.
